I got the new install to boot, I did run into two problems withs grub2.

One is somthing about sparse files (a quick google on another box show a possible fix), and the other was grub2 not looking in the right place the for kernel files. It was doing /(filename) when it should have done (hd0,msdos1)/(filename), should be easy enough to fix.

Once I get those things fixed then I should be able to focus on restoring my files and customizing the install to my taste.

I’m currently installing Kubuntu 12.04 from usb, so far the hardest part has been chosing the new installs system name.

Decided to do a refresh re-partition/format/install instead of upgrading from 11.10 as I would normaly do.

One of the reason being that I wanted to take advandage of brtfs snapshot feature and backing up and install seemed the safest way to move to that. (Letting the installer configure grub2 etc.)

It is nice to be able to access the internet while the install is taking place, I just hope everything works and my next post will be from the newly installed system. 🙂
