So yesterday we was getting ready to go out, and having heard some thunder in the distance, I had things ready to unplug if the weather worsened.

The sounds of distant thunder are replaced with one sudden loud crack/boom/red flash of light, so things got unplugged then. But while it seemed near by, it didn’t look like there was a direct strike.

After waiting for a bit to see if its safe, we leave to do some grocery shopping.

After a while a family member still at home want to bring the Internet back up, so I tell them what to plug back in and that it’ll take a few minutes for things to boot up .

They message back, No Internet, sounds like they did what they should have. But I can’t do anymore from remote, so it’ll have to wait for me to get back home.

Later I get back home, get something to eat and start to figure out what is wrong and what it’ll take to get things fixed.

After a while I figured out, the modem, the router, and the switch are all dead. And I haven’t had that router or switch for more than 4 months. 🙁

So I dig around, and find an old adsl modem, redo the connections with another switch I had and re-configure a wifi router to handle pppoe again instead of just offering wifi and get Internet stumbling back (and stumbling it is).

Need to replace the adsl 2+ modem, the erlite-3 router, the switch, and the phones. (We will also be getting in line surge protector for the phone line.)

Once we have a new/working phone to test with, we can see if we need to contact the phone company or not to fix the line.

Yesterday when a summer storm moved though, I was a bit concerned about the lighting so I decided to power down and unplug my computer and equipment. Alas when I later when to boot everything back up, my computer didn’t see my external HD’s… It appears the power adapter for the dock stopped work, the green power light just blinks.

Thankfully the household PTB were kind enough to order a replacement, but since that was where I stored all my photos (except for a small group I was working with or queued up for posting online) that kind of puts a damper in my photography activities for a while.

An annoying problem, but thankfully a short-term one that I can work around for now.
